Google almost makes $2B in profit in latest quarter

In another sign of a tech sector recovery, Googl on Thursday surpassed Wall Street's expectations and reported a record fourth-quarter profit of nearly $2 billion.
The search giant's strong results for the quarter and year momentarily took attention away from its headline-grabbing threat last week to pull out of China over censorship and cyberspying.
Google said it earned $1.97 billion, or $6.13 a share, in the final three months of 2009, vs. $382 million, or $1.21 a share, in the final three months of 2008. Fourth-quarter revenue totaled $6.7 billion, a 17% increase.Still, Google's stock price slipped $26.88, to $556.10, a 4.6% decline, in after-hours trading. , Google's CEO, called the fourth quarter an "extraordinary end to a roller-coaster year."Google pushed hard last year to popularize its Google Apps suite of online clerical tools, YouTub and its Android mobile phone operating system. But the vast majority of its sales and profit continue to come from search advertising.
"When you look at where their revenue comes from, it's all about search ads," says Kevin Lee, CEO of search consultancy Didit.Google CFO Patrick Pichette said fourth-quarter results were "very strong" in many of the major markets the company operates in around the globe. Revenue from outside the United States totaled $3.5 billion, representing 53% of total revenue in the fourth quarter of 2009, up from 50% in the fourth quarter of 2008.
Whether China stays in that mix remains to be seen. Schmidt said the company is "in conversations with the Chinese government" about easing censorship and addressing cyberattacks designed to steal proprietary data. He acknowledged that Google is obeying China's laws and offering censored results in China right now.
"We remain quite committed to being there," Schmidt said in a conference call with analysts and reporters.Earlier Thursday, Secretary of State Hillary delivered a watershed speech outlining new initiatives to quell censorship and deter cyberattacks globally. She specifically called on China to conduct a "thorough review" of Google's complaints. "We look for that investigation and its results to be transparent," Clinton said.

The Devil Is In The Details

Statements concerning precisely what data will be sought vary, but some reports indicate the Census effort is already wildly over the line of Constitutional authority. One report quotes Robert LaMacchia, who is said to be with the Census Bureau’s geography division, saying the Census worker will actually want to inspect the premises to look for dwellings that may be concealed. ”We will actually knock on doors and look for hidden housing units. We will find converted garages; from the outside, it may not look like anybody lives there.” Although there are already reports of citizens being threatened with fines and imprisonment for non-cooperation with the Census program, there is no Constitutional authority for the GPS data being collected, and information other than how many people live at the address is beyond the legal scope of the process. Thus, questions about income, firearms on the premises, religion, or any other personal data should be politely deflected on the basis of privacy.
Privacy concerns can be voiced without threatening the government intruder. In this regard, it might be useful to remember that even Demoncrats, and liberal institutions such as the ACLU, also speak frequently about privacy, so it’s hardly radical behaviour to seek to maintain a degree of independence from prying eyes. The fact that government is seeking to sanction trespass, with all sorts of intrusive questions is beyond the point. Clearly they’re doing it, legal or not, and our Christian response should be to try to diplomatically stay under the radar.

Census Accelerated:Advance Team For The Tyrant?

Not only has the 2010 US Census been illegally advanced into the present where it is already fully operational, the criminal regime of “Democratic” leftists that grabbed power in 2008, have reconfigured the program to funnel the new census data directly to the White House.
Adding insult to injury, the socialist group known as A.C.O.R.N., already implicated in the Obama election fraud, is receiving payback funds for the execution of the US 2010 Census. Adding an Orwellian high tech spin to the Constitutionally mandated program, the new Census is recording YOUR location into a mobile computing device through the use of the Global Position Satellite coordinates that are now in widespread use.
Any veteran who fought in Fallujah can tell you that GPS data can be used to pinpoint tactical residential targets through a bevy of military capabilities. When it comes to outsiders unfamiliar with the local turf, or even foreign troops seeking to put down resistance, a GPS address can be indispensable. In short, in the words of Steppenwolf’s John Kay from his hit recording Monster, recorded some 30 years ago, “things look bad from over here.”
What’s A Believer To Do?Because ShortwaveWars (as well as our new outreach StreamWars) monitors and comments on political and patriot phenomena from a Christian perspective, we seek to walk in the counsel of Scripture on all things. Although most ministries blindly advise a short-sighted blanket conformity to Caesar’s various edicts, in America the citizen’s are Caesar. Furthermore, we are cautioned by Christ Himself to be as “wise [read clever] as serpents, and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). Although some patriots are belligerently breathing out threats and slaughter concerning this obvious intrusion into our historic privacy, the discerning Christian should sidestep such passionate braying, and seek to carefully deflect further scrutiny. It is painfully obvious the Beast is deploying the low man on the totem pole via minimum wage workers, in a thinly veiled effort to provide data to his Babylonian brain trust. Any severe antagonism directed towards the Spiritually blind Census drones is sure to be recorded for future access, and this is what should be avoided if at all possible. In short, the data collected is very likely designed to seek to ferret out future opposition to the domestic dictatorship that is presently developing. The trick here is to avoid providing the devils with the data they covet, but to do it in a fashion that feigns conformity to Uncle Samuel’s agenda, so as not to flag your locale as a future target. One should speak of our willingness to do our civic duty (the Census is, after all, a Constitutional element), and it might help to understand the façade surrounding the process is related to determining the population with respect to the electoral process. The idea is representation of the populace cannot be proportionately measured unless the government is aware of the actual population numbers.
Your posture can be that you’re happy to do your part, as you are interested in your voice being heard on important political issues, and we all know this is supposed to be the reason for the Census in the first place. Of course it isn’t, but it’s useless to argue with the Census Epsilons at your door. We might suggest the encounter begin with asking for proper identification. A second picture ID, in addition to a Census ID, is entirely appropriate. One can reasonably state they’ve heard about some burglary and/or robbery by people impersonating Census workers. It’s a good idea to write down the name of the Census worker in case the encounter goes bad.

10 dead in Kabul suicide bombing

KABUL: Afghan officials say at least 10 people including four suicide bombers have been killed in fighting that broke out when Taliban militants launched attacks on government targets in Kabul. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told foreign news agency that 20 armed militants, including some with suicide vests, had entered Kabul to target the presidential palace and other government buildings in central Kabul. Explosions and the rattle of heavy machine-gun fire rattled the city for hours Monday. The Defense Ministry says the situation has been brought largely under control by mid afternoon, although sporadic clashes continue to be reported. At least two shopping centres are on fire, amid reports that militants have blown themselves up. The television reported that Kabul's only five-star hotel is also on fire.

THE SPORTZ ASSASSIN: A BCS Solution For the MWC and WAC Conferences

I think that both the Mountain West Conference (which TCU is a member of) and the Western Athletic Conference (where Boise resides) have shown that they can produce conference champions capable of doing damage in the BCS. Of the "BCS Busters", the MWC has seen Utah win twice and Hawaii get blown off the field ... while the WAC has seen Boise beat Oklahoma in one of the most thrilling bowl games you'll ever see. These guys deserve a chance. With conference championship games being the rage, why not stage a game between the champs of these two conferences? Why not have TCU battle Boise State for the right to get into a BCS bowl? Yeah, both are in the BCS this year but the fact that they haven't beaten anyone of note in months keeps them out of the national title picture.

Massive quake flattens Haiti capital

Schools collapsed, trapping the dead inside, and cries of desperate victims escaped from flattened buildings in the centre of the capital Port-au-Prince, which an AFP correspondent said was “mostly destroyed”.
With thousands of people missing, dazed survivors in torn clothes wandered through the rubble as more than 30 aftershocks rocked the ramshackle capital where more than two million people live, most in the grip of poverty. Some injured survivors wore makeshift slings and blood-soaked bandages. One woman was carried on a bit of debris used as a stretcher, past piles of smashed concrete, from which crushed bodies protruded.
Fanning safety fears in the crime-hit capital, the United Nations said the main prison had collapsed, allowing some inmates to flee into a city where basic services and communications were shut down.

Haiti's people have strong will to rebuild

The earthquake that shook Haiti on Tuesday was only the most recent disaster to lay siege to the most impoverished nation in the Western hemisphere, a country that was beginning to show some signs of rebirth, says Haitian-born American novelist Edwidge Danticat.
"There was a sense after the four storms last year that there were some positive things happening," she said, with new hotels going up and fresh hope for foreign investment, against a long historical backdrop of poverty, natural disaster and political instability.
The magnitude-7.0 quake, she said, "just grinds everything back into the ground."
Even so, Danticat sees hope in a resilient population and an international community that she believes will come to its aid.
"It looks extremely bad right now," she said, "but Haitians will rebuild."

A nudge towards sobriety and health?

If you picked up a bottle of wine and read on the label "The average British drinker drinks one glass of wine a night", would it make you think twice before refilling your glass?
The Conservatives believe it might - and that public information along those lines is one possible way to reduce binge drinking.
The party has been talking to the alcohol industry about using "social norms" to change behaviour.
In practical terms, that might mean a voluntary agreement that bottles of wine or beer would have labelling information telling you about what the average drinker does.
Peer pressure
The idea is that, by telling people what their friends, neighbours or colleagues do, their natural tendency is to want to fit in and do the same.
So, if you claim "most people" do not binge drink, the argument goes that the public will follow that example.

Sri Lanka overcome India to win Mirpur final

Tri-nation tournament final, Mirpur:Sri Lanka 249-6 beat India 245 by four wickets
Sri Lanka won the triangular tournament in Bangladesh, beating India by four wickets with a strong team performance.
India tossed away wickets freely early on in Mirpur, and without Suresh Raina's brilliant 106, they would have struggled to put up any sort of total.
However, their modest 245 all out was overhauled with nine balls remaining.
Former skipper Mahela Jayawardene played the key innings, making 71 not out from 81 balls after India seamer Ashish Nehra had limped off injured.
Questions will be raised about the wicket for the event in Mirpur. In all seven matches the team batting second won with some ease.
But really India could not blame the conditions. With Raina (106 off 115 balls) picking up the baton from Virender Sehwag (42 from 27), the opportunity for a big total was there if only the other batsmen could seize it.
The first Indian wicket to fall was unfortunate, Gautam Gambhir bowled off his thigh-pad in the first over, but the next four were entirely avoidable.

'Madeleine McCann dead' court claim rejected by father

Gerry McCann has angrily dismissed Portuguese detectives' claims his daughter Madeleine is dead.
Senior officers told a Lisbon court on Tuesday they believed the girl had died in the family's holiday apartment.
The hearing is an attempt by former police chief Goncalo Amaral to overturn a ban on his book, which questions the McCanns' account of what happened.
Madeleine, of Rothley, Leicestershire, was nearly four when she went missing in the Algarve on 3 May 2007.
Speaking as he arrived at the court building for a second day of evidence, Mr McCann said there was "no new evidence".

Fresh snow across UK brings more disruption

Fresh snow has hit many parts of the UK, causing more problems for transport amid further limits on road gritting.
Met Office warnings of heavy snow remain in place for north-west England, the West Midlands and southern England, although milder weather is forecast.
Rail and air travellers have again been hit by delays and cancellations, while several roads were closed.
Hundreds of schools did not open and pupils taking exams endured difficult journeys on treacherous roads.
A flight taking more than 60 rescue experts, equipment and search to earthquake-hit Haiti was first to take off when Gatwick airport's runway reopened at 1515 GMT, having been closed all day.
Some rural communities remain cut off, while others are coping with power cuts, water leaks, increasing numbers of potholes and cancelled rubbish collections.

Haiti Chief Says Thousands May Be Dead

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Dawn brought horrible scenes to light in Haiti’s capital on Wednesday: piles of disintegrated concrete, with limbs sticking out and muffled cries emanating from deep inside; wounded people staggering through the streets; and bodies littering the landscape. Huge swaths of Port-au-Prince lay in ruins, and thousands of people were feared dead in the rubble of government buildings, foreign aid headquarters and shantytowns that collapsed a day earlier in a powerful earthquake.

Wyclef Jean lends voice to Haiti earthquake cause

Haitian-born rap star Wyclef Jean has urged fans to donate to relief efforts in the wake of the huge earthquake that struck the Caribbean state on Tuesday.
"Your money will help with relief efforts," he wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter. "They need our help - please help if you can."
The former Fugees star has since said he is now on his way to the Caribbean state, via the Dominican Republic.
"Pray for the people of Haiti [and] me please," he posted.
Jean, 37, was made a roving ambassador for Haiti in 2007 and provides humanitarian aid and assistance through his Yele Haiti foundation.

Google 'may pull out of China after Gmail cyber attack'

Internet giant Google has said it may end its operations in China following a "sophisticated and targeted" cyber attack originating from the country.
The company did not accuse the Chinese government directly, but said it was no longer willing to censor its Chinese search engine - google.cn.
This could result in closing the site, and its Chinese offices, Google said.

The top executive of its Chinese rival Baidu called the move "hypocritical" and financially motivated.

The Bachelor's Rozlyn: Scandal a Big Lie

The Bachelor's Rozlyn Papa made quite an impression on viewers - and Jake Pavelka - on the first two episodes of the ABC reality show, emerging as a favorite.

That was until an "inappropriate relationship" with a staffer derailed her chances last night. But she says the scandal that got her get kicked off is a gigantic lie.

“It seems they want the ratings!” the model said.
Ya think?

Rozlyn Papa denies she "cheated" on the season’s star, hunky pilot Jake. Asked if she had sex with a member of The Bachelor crew, she says, “Absolutely not, no.”

She has adamantly denied an affair took place.

Jake Pavelka and Rozlyn Papa
The show’s host Chris Harrison called the scandal “incredibly unfortunate” and said “horrible decisions were made.” According to Papa, the lies have taken a toll.

“This seeps into my personal life,” she says. “I have a 7-year-old little boy at home that I want to look up to me, and to have this blatant lie out there perpetuated by the show itself - it’s hurtful. It’s scary to think what my son will think of me.”

Papa admits being a “good friend” of the producer with whom she’s rumored to have had the affair, but says that gave her no advantage with Jake Pavelka.

“I would absolutely call him a friend,” she says.

“But I'm portrayed as a cheater,” she says. “It comes down to my son. Why would you go on national television and throw a mom under the bus like that?”
